What's the idea?

Here is the idea blog.
The "idea" is to discuss and develop ideas, and then to take action.

What do we want Arkansas City to be, and how do we get there?

I will get the ball rolling by posting an idea later today or tomorrow.

Feel free to post your own ideas.
You may post in the comment sections, or, you can send me your email address and I will fix it so you can post on here just like I do. Of course if you do that, you will not be anonymous anymore.

I do not want to moderate this blog. As long as it remains civil and mostly positive, I will not.

So what do you think?

My previous post had way too many errors... should have looked at it better.

My idea is to start a committee to work on a historical preservation grant to get new windows in the downtown buildings that are currently boarded or cemented up.

The downtown beautification is great. There now needs to be some concentration on bringing the buildings up to shape.

Thanks for posting.
The city's historic preservation board worked on this, and actually nearly had a grant in hand to fix the windows at the old church on Central..

its called Vinelife Fellowship now, and the city owns it.
costs well over $100,000 to fix those very old stained glass windows.

i think the historic preservation board is working on the grant again.

in the meantime, getting another group together would be good.
Dotty Smith is also planning on bringing it up again at the city commission.

They want to work on it, but need people to get involved.
A citizens group to do this could do a lot of good.

One big problem is that most of the buildings are owned by out of town landlords who dont care much about the buildings.

who wants to be on the committee ?

Not sure this fits here, but I have been thinking about this for a while. Many houses in town need fixing up on the outside,. The businesses downtown have been asked to fix thier windows. Any of us who do fix up our property face higher taxes. With the two new taxes just passed there is not a lot of incentive to so anyting that will make a persons' taxes go up even more. Is it possible to fix up the outisde of ones house without the prioperty taxes automatically going up? I really need to put up siding, but I can't afford to do that and have my propetry taxes jump several thousand dollars. I put in storm windows and my taxes wnet up almost $1000. Taxes here are higher than any place have ever lived and I have moved around a bit.
