One idea would be to form a Main Street Association.
This group - which has to be made up of private citizens - can apply for grant money and make things happen in the downtown area.
Look at what Newkirk has done.

Yes! I think it is a great idea.
A town that I have visited a few times in Florida has a monthly "Friday Fest" It is the first Friday of the month all year. They have bands, food vendors, crafts, and other activities. The event is put on by the main street association. It is a pretty cool event and it draws pretty large crowd.
Also, I was driving through Newkirk in December and there were people living in a few of the downtown buildings. It gave some life to the downtown to see lights on at night.
I know there are a few people who do live downtown in Ark City but I think it would be a really interesting concept to make the downtown more mixed used with residential and retail.

The monthly "Friday Fest" is also a great idea. Add that to the farmers market in the summer, it could be cool.

Julie and Charles, I think that a Main Street Association would be extremely beneficial to the growth of our community. I would like to get involved. Several years back there was the annual "sidewalk sale". Most stores in downtown would set-up tables on the sidewalk and have sales.
Maybe have a sidewalk sale, farmer's market, and craft show all combined. Those businesses that wouldn't have anything to sale, (banks, etc) could allow the sidewalk in front of their building to be used for crafts and produce booths.
Schedule the event in the early spring and it would help bring some people in during the "down time" in between the Arkalala, car show, and the various music fests.

Anything ever come of this?
People are looking for Chimney Sweeps this time of year! If they are around they should advertise - if not there is an opportunity for someone!
BTW it would be more interesting if people listed the things they can't get or services they need to help identify possible opportunites/businesses.
